Creating a household budget can be a daunting task. When most people think of the word budget, they aren't thinking positive thoughts. But don't look at budgeting as restricting or controlling. For budgets that work, there needs to be a little room to give too. While it is good to have control over your money and know how much you have available to spend each month, your budget should allow you some freedom for the things you want and like to do.

There are three things you need to include in your budget to make it work for you. If you include these three elements into your budget, there is a better chance you will succeed.

1. Income - Income is the easiest and most obvious aspect of your budget. If you are creating a budget, you will need to know how much you are paid and when you are paid. Your pay dates are important because they will help you determine what bills you are able to pay out of your paychecks.

Also note there is a difference between being paid bi-weekly or twice a month. When you are paid bi-weekly, you get a check every other week, on a Friday for example. Two months out of the year you will get an 'extra' check which means in those two months you are going to get three checks. If you plan it right, you can use that extra money towards savings or paying off debt.

If you are paid twice a month, on the first and fifteenth for example, you will usually not be paid on the same day every month and you will always get two pay checks per month.

If you do odd jobs or have variable income, go ahead and add this into your monthly income. Just make sure not to over-estimate. It is always best to underestimate and get used to living on less than overestimate and try to cut back later.

2. Expenses - In addition to including your monthly expenses in your budget, you should plan for things that do not occur monthly. Common things include homeowners or auto insurance, birthdays real estate taxes or holidays. There are more extensive lists online to help jog your memory so you don't forget any expenses.

Plan for these expenses ahead of time so you have an idea of how much you plan to spend. Then take that amount and divide it by twelve to get the total amount you need to set aside each month to pay for these expenses. I recommend having a separate account for expenses such as these so your not tempted to spend it each month.

3. Due dates - It is important to know when your expenses are due each month so you can plan your budget accordingly. If you know when your bills are due, you will know which paycheck needs to cover certain bills for that time period. You might find that you have the bulk of your bills due at the same time. If this is the case, contact a few of the companies and ask to have your due date changed so your bills are evenly spread out during the month.

Having a good handle on these three elements will help you when creating your budget. Successful budgets that work for people work best when the person is honest. Don't set yourself up for failure by neglecting to add expenses. It will just cause you stress and problems later on.
